The right to asylum is a fundamental human right. Yet every day, asylum seekers in Greece face rejection, detention, or deportation-simply because they lack access to legal support. The Greek Council for Refugees (GCR) is the country's leading provider of free legal aid to asylum seekers and refugees. This project ensures that the most vulnerable individuals are not denied protection due to bureaucracy or lack of representation.
Thousands of people in need of protection arrive in Greece each year. Many face complex asylum procedures in a foreign language, with no state-appointed lawyer or interpreter. Without legal representation, even legitimate claims are rejected. Vulnerable people-including women, survivors of torture, and unaccompanied minors-are at risk of detention or deportation to danger.
GCR provides comprehensive legal support, including counseling and representation during asylum interviews, appeals before national and international courts, intervention in cases of unlawful detention or deportation, and assistance for survivors of torture, trafficking, and unaccompanied minors, coordinated with interpreters, psychologists, and field workers for a multidisciplinary approach.
Without legal assistance, the right to asylum is just a promise. Your support defends not only individuals-but human rights, fairness, and the rule of law.
