Welcoming a new cohort!
By Nikole Lim | International Director

Though the pandemic has set us back in reopening our programs, we are continuing to serve the Malkia women in new and exciting ways! Our Malkia program provides a safe space for women in prostitution to lead in their places of work and explore their dream careers through our trainings. We have modified our ways of connecting through outdoor gatherings, consistent phone calls, and referrals for alternative work.
Ten of previous graduates are now part of an entrepreneurship training with a partnering organization and we are excited to welcome ten new women into the 2021 cohort! Through your support of our program, we are able to expand and support more women to thrive in their vocation.

Building Supportive Connections

Even in this new year, the COVID-19 pandemic is still raging and negatively impacting many people's lives. One of its devastating effects has been isolation which continues to increase all manner of disparities. We have not been able to meet physically for our programs which has a posed a huge challenge for the communities we serve.
The Malkia ladies (young women working in prostitution) have not had their in-person economic empowerment training during this pandemic. Yet we have realized that though we are apart, we can still be connected. We have strengthened our communication and follow up systems, making frequent phone calls, socially distanced home visits where necessary and supplying these women with food baskets from time to time. This has provided a sense of community for them and helped keep hope alive that better days are yet to come.
We are grateful that we can still provide a safe and supportive presence for this community of young women in the midst of such difficult times. We appreciate every donation from our community of donors as their giving has helped keep hope alive for our community.

Sharing Resources on Violence Prevention
By Trizah Waiyaki | Operations and Development Director

They say information is power and when it comes to sexual violence prevention, this statement rings true. The shadow pandemic of increased gender based violence is still lurking and this has had severely adverse effects the world over. In Kenya, over 30,000 teenage pregnancies have been reported during the period of the COVID-19 pandemic which a majority of the cases being a result of sexual violence. The young women in our Malkia program have shared their concerns and fears brought about by this shadow pandemic.
In the month of August, we rallied these young women and together distributed over 500 violence prevention resource cards in their communities. This provided young women with information on how to identify sexual violence, how to prevent it and how to respond to it. We also got an opportunity to respond to questions about violence prevention and to counsel with those that really needed it.
We thank our donors for their generosity that made it possible for us to print and distribute these resource cards contributing to the building of a violence free world!
