During January and February 2024, the Trustees made several visits to the sites managed by Rainforest Protectors Trust. These visits resulted in appointing a Rainforest Guardian, a young villager currently making a living by tapping Kitul trees in the forest daily to make Kitul Treacle. Rainforest Guardians is an initiative started by Rainforest Protectors Trust few years ago to create a win-win situation for the rainforest and the surrounding communities. The extra income from being a Rainforest Guardian will help both his family and the rainforest.
The visit also identified a suitable land for the proposed Rainforest Conservation and Education Center and negotiations/title checks are currently underway. The land is easily accessible for visitors and several endemic freshwater fish were found in the adjoining stream, which would provide a great opportunity to educate school children and visitors as well as create the enthusiasm for nature conservation.
With a great start to the new year, we are looking forward to accomplishing our conservation goals this year and possibly even more. But we need your help to reach these goals. Our biggest challenge is finding the needed funds followed by volunteers to help spread the word. Please consider making a donation or becoming a member and help save these last remaining pristine rainforests for future generations!
