How the funds received through GlobalGiving were used

1.0  Chimpanzee feeding

Proper and adequate nutrition for captive chimpanzees is vital for their survival and the enhancement of their welfare. The funds received from the generous donors through the GlobalGiving platform were used to procure fresh food such as tomatoes, sweet potatoes, carrots, eggplants, cassava, cabbages, papaya, okra red beans, and bananas on a weekly basis and dry rations including cornmeal, millet, and soy flour.

The feeding routine of 4 times a day was maintained at 8:00 am, 11:00 am, 2:30 pm, and 6:00 pm.

2.0 Enrichment

Playing tyres and hammocks were fixed in the chimpanzee holding facility to enrich the chimpanzees' nesting environment when they return to nest in the facility in the evening.

Hay grass was procured on a quarterly basis and provided to the chimpanzees daily for making nests in their hammocks. The enrichment provided has a positive impact on the behavior and development of the chimpanzees.

3.0 Veterinary care

The chimpanzees were monitored by the veterinarian and caregivers for any signs of illness and injuries.  There were 4 minor injuries that healed after spraying with iodine and salt solution and 2 major injuries that required surgical intervention. The injuries were partly attributed to the tensions and fighting in the community in competition for mates, hierarchy, and food. Chimpanzees above 30 years were given multivitamins on a monthly basis to boost their body immunity.

All the chimpanzees underwent health checkups and all individuals were found to be in good health. The procedures conducted during the checks included;

  • Body examination and weight measurements
  • Dental and eye examination
  • Blood, urine, and fecal sample collection and analysis.
  • Scanning of the heart, liver, kidneys, urinary bladder, and uterus using the ultrasound machine.
  • Replacement of implants in all female chimpanzees

5.0 Holding facility cleaning and disinfection

Procured cleaning materials and disinfectants for the holding facility where the chimpanzees spend a night. Cleaning and disinfection are done daily to promote hygiene and minimize transmission of the disease-causing pathogens in the chimp community.
