HMI, its partners, and supporters tirelessly continue their work in the Torbali Camps with Syrian refugee children and their families in Izmir, Türkiye. In recent months, we carried out regular field visits to the camps under our coordination, with the valuable support of UNICEF, UNDP, Rotary International (District 2440), and the Güzelyali Rotaract Club. Together, we aimed to contribute to the families’ well-being by addressing their basic needs and supporting the children’s education.
At one of these visits, 35 families received essential food packages including flour, oil, and rice. This support was especially meaningful ahead of Ramadan for families who rely entirely on seasonal work. Additionally, 35 children were provided with school supply kits, including notebooks, writing materials, art supplies, and school bags to support their learning journey. Beyond the distribution, the day was filled with smiles, activities, and beautiful moments spent with the children, reminding us that true support means care, connection, and encouragement.
In addition to these visits, every week, our teacher, Ahmet Hoca, works with the children on their math and Turkish—sessions that require immense patience and skill. It is a great challenge to keep students focused when they are isolated from the outside world and just trying to learn how to pick things up. As Ahmet Hoca says, "It’s not always easy getting everyone on the same page, but seeing them finally 'get it' is the most rewarding part."
One of our volunteers also shared how amazing it is to observe how seriously these children take their education, and how well they take care of the notebooks they received. With every visit, the notebooks are more filled with answers and their heads with knowledge.
HMI and its supporters' dedication to Syrian children and their families in the camps will continue, as we are often the only hope for these people to break out of poverty, instability, and a lack of education. Please, support our work by making a donation today.
