Project Report | May 4, 2026
Couffo Department, Benin Academic Year 2025-2026

By Camille B. SODJI | Project Leader

Before diving into the details of this report, allow us to simply say thank you. Not merely as a formality, but with the deep conviction that your donations are concretely and sustainably changing the lives of children for whom, until recently, dropping out of school seemed like the only possible future. This report belongs to them as much as it does to you.

1. The rediscovered joy of going to school

There is one image that says it all. Every morning, in the villages of Couffo, children run to school. They no longer go reluctantly, driven by obligation or held back by the shame of not having what they need to show up with dignity. They go willingly, with new notebooks, a clean uniform, and something precious that you have given back to them: pride.

Because that is exactly what this is about. By removing material barriers — the lack of supplies, uniforms, and a reliable meal — you have lifted the invisible obstacles that used to break the youngest students' motivation. These children, who sometimes watched their peers head off to school without being able to follow, are now at the heart of school life.

School attendance has seen remarkable growth in the communities we serve. This is not just an abstract figure: it is a more vibrant classroom, a teacher rediscovering the meaning of their profession, and a community gradually understanding that education is the most solid bet on the future.

2. The exam period: a moment of truth

We are now entering the final trimester of the 2025–2026 academic year. For thousands of students in Couffo, this period is filled with both hope and apprehension. Three official exams are on the horizon, each representing a decisive turning point:

- CEPPrimary School Certificate: the first door to the future

- BEPC Lower Secondary School Certificate: the transition to high school

- BACHigh School Diploma: the gateway to higher education

Our team is currently traveling through the department's schools to meet with these candidates. We bring them encouragement, of course, but above all an essential message: they are not alone. Behind them are men and women, on the other side of the world, who believe in them and who have taken concrete action so that they can take these exams with their heads held high. This awareness is invaluable for young people who take their tests under often precarious conditions.

3. What remains to be built

The momentum is there. But this positive dynamic also reveals, by contrast, the full extent of the needs. The increase in school attendance — a wonderful development — is putting growing pressure on aging infrastructure: insufficient desks, deteriorating latrines, and a frequent lack of access to water.

Opening the school door is an essential first step. But the real challenge is ensuring that children stay there: fed, healthy, equipped, and in possession of the official documents that will allow them to legally validate their educational journey. Every child who drops out due to a lack of decent conditions is a setback for all of us. We cannot accept this.

OPPORTUNITY · JULY 15, 2026

GlobalGiving July Bonus Day — every donation is doubled

On July 15, 2026, GlobalGiving will automatically double the impact of every contribution. This is a rare opportunity, and we want to make the most of it for the children of Couffo. Here is where these funds will be directly invested:

- Repairing desks and restoring latrines

- Expanding school meal programs to additional schools

- Securing birth certificates for newly enrolled students

Investing in these children's education is laying a brick in the foundation of a rising Benin. As the country's national education sector plan reminds us, education is the most powerful lever to lift future generations out of a cycle of poverty that has lasted far too long.

You may never see it directly. But somewhere in Couffo, a child running to school this morning owes you something. A chance. A possible future. And that is, without a doubt, the most beautiful form of recognition.

With all our gratitude and renewed commitment,
