Attending university is the dream of many low-income young people in Brazil, especially Black women. Higher-skilled jobs and income can mean a change in their social reality, but few manage to complete their undergraduate studies. Instituto Repartir is a non-profit organization that exists to strengthen the inclusion of these young people in universities and the job market through technical training, human development, and the generation of work and income.
In Brazil, 58.3% of young people who enter university drop out before graduation, most of them due to social and economic risks (Map of Higher Education, 2025). Only 18% of Black people aged 18 to 24 are in higher education (IPEA, 2020). Robust public policies to support student retention are lacking. In addition to interrupted dreams, educational, social, and racial inequalities are perpetuated.
Instituto Repartir offers technical training, human development, paid internships, and connections to the job market for Communication students from low-income families in different regions of Brazil, especially Black women. These young people develop Communication projects for social impact organizations that cannot afford to pay for these projects. This is our Social Technology: the young people who benefit also generate a positive impact on society.
Most of the young people served by the Instituto Repartir are the first in their families to attend university. Graduation breaks a cycle of generational exclusion, increasing their chances of accessing more qualified jobs. The average income of Brazilians increases by 89% compared to the income of those who fall by the wayside (FGV, 2024). A more just and less unequal society is the legacy we want to leave.
