The Center for Safety & Change, Inc. (the Center) is a nonprofit agency whose mission is to develop strategies to end gender-based violence and provide shelter and supportive services that empower survivors of domestic violence, sexual abuse and other crimes. Since its inception in 1979, the Center has been the sole service provider to victims of sexual assault and their families in Rockland County, NY. The Center's Sexual Assault Program includes a 24-hour rape crisis hotline, accompaniment to court and other appointments, legal services, trial preparation, counseling and therapy, a 15-bed emergency residential shelter, services for families of survivors, support groups, translation, transportation, and a Sexual Assault Forensic Examiner program at both of Rockland’s acute care hospitals.
Over the last three months (August-October) the Center provided a total of 6,243 services to 204 sexual trauma victims/survivors. One of these survivors was a young woman who was being sexually abused and trafficked by her stepfather. The ADA, detectives, and the Center’s staff (the Special Victims Advocate, Coordinator of Anti-Human Trafficking Services, and shelter staff) were able to provide support to the client. The client is now in therapy, has moved out of our shelter and lives in her own apartment. The client is receiving assistance from DSS and the client continues to receive support from the Center for Safety & Change.
In addition, this reporting period, the Center’s Coordinator of Anti-Human Trafficking Services received a call from a hospital about a trafficking case. The Coordinator provided crisis intervention and consulted with our shelter. Once determining there was space at the shelter, the hospital provided transportation to the Center’s main office and the Coordinator brought her to the shelter. Upon their arrival, the Coordinator provided necessities, safety planning and supportive counseling. The Coordinator continues provides advocacy and counseling. The survivor has been trafficked for the last ten years and is working on processing the trauma she endured.
