Student connections

By Khris Nedam | US Director

Upon hearing about the condition of life for children their age in Afghanistan, students from Michigan wanted to reach out and help.   Since1998 hundreds of students have actively raised awareness and funds to support the children in rural Afghanistan get an education, health care, and have access to clean water.   The impact not only significantly improved the lives of the families in a rural village, but also impacted the lives of students across the US as they saw their hard work make a difference for their peers half a world away.   As the teacher who helped lead the project, I am constantly thrilled when former students want to remain involved, or contact me to ask about how the project is going.  We have been working with village elders to grow our project for 25 years!   We have had our struggles, our successes, our losses.   Students have exchanged videos and messages over the years.  They have cried over traumatic events or set backs.  They have stood up for what they believe despite working in a difficult area of the world.  Parents continuously share or send letters about how grateful they are that their children have developed an awareness of world affairs and compassion for others.   Students donate their time to make crafts, bake goods, or knit caps to raise funds.  They organize presentations, our web site, and run fundraisers with me, or independently.  They feel a strong bond with the project and continue to be involved in one way or another.  These are the bridges of cultural understanding President Kennedy spoke about so many years ago.  As life in Afghanistan has taken another difficult turn, we are proud to continue to work for children (both boys and girls) to get access to quality education and health care.   I look forward to watching students making these connections for the next 25 years!
