More than 100 Kichwa women in five communities along Ecuador's Rio Napo are seeking sustainable ways to earn income and strengthen food security without damaging the rainforest they call home. Their communities face limited economic opportunities and growing pressure from oil, mining, and other extractive activities. These threats affect local livelihoods and the 149,500+ acres of highly biodiverse Amazon rainforest the communities own and steward.
Rainforest Partnership and local partners support Kichwa women in developing sustainable enterprises based on cacao, honey, handicrafts, medicinal plants, native fish, and other eco-friendly products. The project provides training, tools, infrastructure, and technical support that help women build reliable livelihoods, gain financial independence, and improve food security. By creating local economic opportunities, the project strengthens communities' ability to protect their native forest.
This project can help the Kichwa women build lasting economic independence while improving well-being for over 1,450 community members.
