ABOUT COMMUNITY OF CHILDREN’S RIGHTS

PROJECT STATEMENT

Education is considered a fundamental non-negotiable right of every child, hence, implying that it is a primary state responsibility to enable citizens to access education as an entitlement. The adoption of this right has been successfully implemented in many countries; however, unfortunately in countries like Pakistan, still a significant number of children have no access to even their basic rights. As a result, they are unable to get quality education, health facilities, security, and protection. Especially, differently-abled children do not get even the basic facilities they need. Pakistani children, born with physical and/or mental disorders, have little prospect of a functional adult life because of social ignorance about their condition and an absence of trained professionals to care for them.

Multan is the sixth largest city of Pakistan, situated in the Southern Punjab Region. In Multan, 41% of children within 5 to 16 years age are out of school. Many public schools in Multan do not have even basic facilities, including electricity, drinking water supply, toilets, and boundary walls, etc. Shah Rukn-e-Alam Colony is a well-renowned area of Multan; however, due to lack of awareness, many children in this area are either receiving low-quality education or are out of schools. Due to illiteracy, the majority of the families in this area earn their income either through unskilled adult and child labor work in industries, such as power-looms, or by running kiosks. Along with this fact, there are many differently-abled children in the area with mental and/or physical disabilities, who have continuously been neglected by society. Moreover, there is no well-developed public school system in the nearby vicinity of this area.

Keeping in view the above-mentioned facts, we selected the Al Mustafa School Project at Mohalla Shareef-pura, Shah Rukn-e-Alam Colony, to facilitate children who were either normal or differently-abled. In the Al Mustafa School, 100% free education is provided to all its 170 enrolled students (150 normal students and 20 differently-abled students). However, due to limited resources, it was difficult to fulfill the needs of both normal and differently-abled children. Thus, CCR planned to facilitate the children of AL Mustafa School through the provision of uniforms and stationery among normal and differently-abled children, and wheelchairs among differently-abled children. To create awareness about tree-plantation in children, we also planned to distribute plants among the students of this school.
