Great News: 2016 ICAP Application is open!

By Rashida Petersen | ICAP Individual Fundraising Chair

Dear ICAP Supporter,

We would like to share with you a special note from ICAP Founder and Director,  Dr. Tom Rowe:

Great news!  We now have sufficient commitments for funding to ensure there will be an ICAP 2016.  We are deeply indebted to Charlotte Kea, the ICAP 2015, the ICAP AA Fundraising Committee, the ICAP AA Board and all of YOU who have made contributions this past year for making this happen. I do not yet know how many new ICAP 2016 Fellows there will be because it depends on what funds come in between now and June.  However, we know we will have a group and still hope it can be a full cohort.

With the help of a Working Group set up by Charlotte Kea that proposed a series of changes in the program and application, the criteria for selection and the ICAP application form have been modified somewhat and there should be improvements in the program in the fall as well.  With respect to criteria, the mid-career participants who attend ICAP in 2016 will be selected from applicants who:

  • Have a demonstrated commitment to increasing the diversity of senior leadership in the United States in international affairs;
  • Are US citizens or permanent residents;
  • Are professionals who have been or are now in international careers, generally with 7 years or more of professional work experience;
  • Have command of at least one language other than English;
  • Have educational credentials necessary for advancement, usually a Masters, JD or other advanced degree (although work experience may serve as an equivalent);
  • Have outstanding achievements that demonstrate potential to serve in the highest levels of administration and policy making;
  • Have professional recommendations indicating unusual promise for leadership; and
  • Are committed to supporting other ICAP Fellows and to mentoring those junior to them in international affairs.

We very much welcome recommendations from ICAP alumni and senior mentors for applicants.  Those who have been part of the program have a good sense of who will benefit and who would be a good addition to the ICAP family.  So I hope you will email me about any friend or colleague you encourage to apply.  At the same time, we do want recommendations as well from people familiar will the professional capabilities and performance of candidates. So encourage any friend or colleague to obtain those recommendations as well as your personal support.

ICAP 2016 will be held in two parts: an optional one day introduction in Washington, DC, on September 24, 2016; and a week long program in Aspen, Colorado, October 8-16, 2016. Applications should be completed and submitted either via post to my attention at the address below or via email by May 16, 2016 to icap@du.edu, with a copy to Tom.Rowe@du.edu. Letters of recommendation should be submitted to the same postal address or email. The application process will open immediately and close on May 16, 2016.

Thank you for your support of ICAP and all you do to improve the quality and diversity of US leadership in international affairs.

Warm Regards, Tom
