One of the key strategies for fighting with poverty is through building people’s capacity and HPPI through its projects is working in the areas of skill training and capacity building of youths and adults.
HPPI runs various skill development programs which aim to empower women economically. These programs offer trainings on tailoring, beautician, basic computer skills and handicrafts. In 2016-17,HPPI has trained 925 women on Basic & Advance Tailoring and Beautician course in its different project locations.
Post completion of three months training in respective courses, women are felicitated with Certificates and Start Up kits like Sewing machine/Scissors, Measuring tape etc. (for trainees from Tailoring) and Beauty kits for trainees from Beautician course to help them kick-start their small enterprise endeavours. Approximately 90% of the trained women have been engaged in small-scale commercial enterprises offering tailoring, beautician, handicrafts and other services to native and neighbouring villages/communities by either working from their homes or through jobs.
Kamlesh is one of such trainees from Dharuhera, Haryana, who completed 3 months training course on tailoring provided by HPPI. She has gathered all the requisite skills to design and produce entire garments in a span of three months at the Skill Centre under qualified experts. She says “As a woman, to be able to design and make my own clothes is a feeling of exuberance that is hard to express in words. To not depend on shops, to fix and alter my clothes in my house, to be able to stitch clothes for my children, all this ushers a feeling of self-reliance and freedom that is hard to express”.
Kamlesh adds, “My husband works as a flex print maker. Over the years we’ve struggled to make ends meet let alone being able to save for the future of our children. The skill gives me a lot of confidence. I feel fairly confident that we’ll be able to secure a comfortable future for my children now.” While for some this training is a way to find their independence and gaining a sustainable livelihood option, for many such as Kamlesh, it has helped considerably to augment the household income.
Thank you all our donors for your generous support and donations with which we could help many poor women in making them self-reliant.
