Education is the main pillar of sustainable development. It enables self-reliance and economic growth by enhancing skills and increasing access to opportunities for better livelihoods. Yet across the world, 59 million children and 65 million adolescents are out of school. More than 120 million children do not even complete primary education.
Humana People to People India’s innovative Kadam Programme focuses on getting out-of-school children back into school in their age-appropriate grade. It is an 11-month programme where out-of-school children are enrolled in the Kadam centres. These centres provide a right blend of academic learning and skill-based experiences, suitable for varied age group and learning levels. This multi-graded learning environment in the classroom helps children learn progressively from one step-to the next at their own pace. To encourage peer-to-peer learning and help children support each other in advancing the Steps, small groups of three (TRIOs) are formed. The thematic learning is carried out every month to develop social, emotional and life skills of the children. When the child reaches a learning level appropriate to his/her age, he/she is mainstreamed to formal schooling system after the end-line test.
Nearly 22,000 OOSC students have been mainstreamed to formal schools from across 739 Kadam centres in 20 districts in Haryana. Apart from Haryana, the Kadam programme is also running successfully in the states of Chhattisgarh and Maharashtra.
