November: National Homeless Youth Awareness Month

By Lindsay Pankok | Director of Corporate Partnerships

Former Streetwork Project client Abdul with director of our Harlem drop-in center Francis Aponte-Veras

Did you know that November is Homeless Youth Awareness Month?

According to a 2015 study by U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, on a single night in 2015, there were approximately 36,907 homeless youth throughout all of the United States. This includes young people who are living in shelters, on the streets, in cars or vacant buildings, are “couch surfing” or living in other unstable circumstances.

Here at Safe Horizon, our Streetwork Project operates two drop-in centers, an overnight shelter, and an outreach program for homeless youth.
  • This year Streetwork provided direct services to 1,058 young homeless people.
  • Our outreach team provided 13,699 outreach contacts, meaning we provided information, food and other necessities like bottled water, personal hygiene products and even socks and gloves.
Homeless young people often face a day-to-day struggle to survive. Many who we work with have experienced family abuse, violence, rejection and instability.
Thank you so much for donating to Safe Horizon to support these young people.
Sincerely,
Lindsay Pankok
Director of Corporate Partnerships
