Much of the country is in the grip of extremely cold weather. In New York City, temperatures have been in the single digits. With the harsh wind, it feels even colder.
For young people surviving on the streets of New York City without housing, the daily struggle to get by is difficult enough when the weather is nice. But extreme cold and potentially life-threatening weather poses another risk.
To reach homeless young people living on the street and in need of resources to stay safe, Streetwork Project operates two drop-in centers, an overnight shelter, and a street outreach program.
Our outreach team goes out nearly every night of the year, even during extreme weather, and provides supplies such as coats, blankets, gloves, hats, hand warmers, water, sandwiches, and other essentials. We also go underground to reach people taking shelter in the subways.
We reach out to young people between the ages of 13-25 and last year, we made more than 13,000 contacts.
When we make an outreach contact to a homeless young person, we provide more than a sandwich or warm clothes. We are letting people know that someone cares.
