SI4DEV Healthy Adolescence program is training 150 secondary school students in rural community secondary school in Oyo State on mental health issues like depression (mental health education), Soft Skills (communication, Leadership and self-management, and Problem-solving skills), hard skills, and mentoring opportunity.
This project is relevant because Young people between the ages of 10-24 years constitute one-third of Nigeria’s population while adolescents age 10-19 years constitute almost a fifth, this significant but vulnerable population is exposed to a broad range of mental issues (Depression, anxiety, substance abuse and suicide). A lot of adolescents between the ages of 13 and 19 years are depressed, this leads to low academic performance, social withdrawal from school activities, truancy, substance abuse including alcohol intake, and eventually suicide. These adolescents end up not leading a productive and fulfilling lifestyle
The Project is effective as
1. During the first week of the SI4DEV Healthy Adolescent Development Project across 3 community secondary schools, Students learned about choosing the right career.
2.During the second week of the SI4DEV Healthy Adolescent Development Project: 150 adolescents across 3 community secondary schools in Ibadan were trained on common mental health problems among adolescents: Depression, Self-esteem, Substance abuse, and suicide.
3. During the third week of the SI4DEV Healthy Adolescent Development Project: 150 students across 3 secondary schools in Ibadan were trained on; developing positive mental well-being; skills for rape prevention.
4. During the fourth week of SI4DEV Healthy Adolescent Development: students were trained on community development.
5. During the Fifth week of SI4DEV Healthy Adolescent Development Project week 5: Training of 150 students across 3 community secondary schools in Ibadan on My Career and I.
