Each Christmas a few children are able to go to homes over the Christmas and New Year week. Those who stay behind feel quite left out as the others come back with exciting tales! This year our social worker Kate and auxiliary social worker Sheila decided to take up the challenge to find homes for all the children for that week. After a lot of hard work, homes were found for all of them. This meant they were all with families for Christmas and had a very special time. It also meant a real break for our staff who have all really appreciated it! The further blessing is that one family has already decided to foster/adopt the child they looked after and others and wanting to take the children for repeat visits.
Before they went for their Christmas break we were able to spoil them all with new clothes, toys and goodies, thanks to the generous donations of people like yourself.
Thank you so much for caring and for making a difference.
May you have a blessed 2012

Fikelela Childrens Centre offers short term residential care to orphans and vulnerable children. One of the most important parts of our programme is family re-unification, placing children back into their extended family. When children are placed with us by social workers, the initial family has been screened and no family members found willing to take the child. Then begins the detective work!! Our diligent auxiliary social worker has been able to trace granmothers who lost contact with daughter years ago, aunts or other family members. Last month two little boys were reunited with thier grandmother in the Eastern Cape.
Our biggest success story was the case of Estelle. Her mother was from Tanzania, and passed away in South Africa. We placed her with a foster family, but sadly the foster mum passed away. We then tried to trace the family in Tanzania and through a wonderful series of god-incidences were able to track down her maternal aunt and uncle in Dar Es Salaam. She is now home, living with them and enjoying getting to know her girl cousins!
We would like to thank you so much for the wonderful support that you gave to the global giving campaign! we raised $4470 which means that we are now a permanent member of the Global giving website.
The last few months have been quite busy. Sadly our Social worker Pozi moved on but we have a wonderful new social worker Kate lagwa and we look forward to her drive and energy! We are restructuring the centre in order to make space for more children. Sadly our previous driver, Simon Ndekiso, who retired in December was shot and killed, which reminds us all of the dangerous area the centre is in and we continue to pray for our staff as they travel back and forth.
We had a wonderful 10 year celebration with Archbishop Thabo Makgoba, where the children (though rather sleepy!) brought the house down with their songs!
