The Support for Orlando LGBTQ Fund was established to support the non-profit community in the Orlando area that has been so dramatically impacted by the mass shooting at the Pulse nightclub in June of this year. As of this date, over $30,000 has been contributed to this fund. Currently a needs assessment is being conducted, and funds from this fund as well as those received from some national foundations will be provided to qualifying non-profit organizations through a grant application process. Grants are expected to start being made in early 2017.
The specific focus of this campaign is not to assist the victims of the shooting directly. Other groups and organizations are handling that extremely well. The focus of this fund is more medium to long-term to assist organizations that will be impacted and serving those impacted, sometime years into the future. Studies from other mass shootings have shown that individuals directly impacted, including both those at the club and first-responders, will have mental health and support needs for a considerable period of time.
We also are looking to support and strengthen the joint LGBT and Latino communities through strengthening the non-profit organizations that specially serve the intersection of these two communities.
