Background:
Raksha Nepal has been actively working for women and children for the past 10 years. This organization supports those girls, women and thier children who have been through different types of violence (sexual abuse, domestic violence, trafficking, polygamy victim etc) or who are vulnerable to violence. It also works in favor of the victims to raise their voice to the concerned institutions and help them get justice.
In the same context, since last 5 years,Raksha Nepal has established a child Transit Home for those vulnerable children who have gone through negligence, orphans, esxually abused and other violations. The main objective to keep them in this transit home is to prevent them form following the wrong path and enjoy the basic rights like other normal children. Moreover, these children also get oppertunity to make their life better. Raksha Nepal has been trying its best to give a safe and family environment to these vulnerable children, with limited funding source. RN with personal contributions has extended different kinds of support to more than 2500 children so far. Currently, it has 30 children in its transit home. RN has been coordinating with different organizations for their secure future.
The support through Globalgiving to Raksha Nepal transit home children has been very valuable. This support has been towards their fooding, clothing and other extra activities, which is very important for these childring living here.
Main Activities:
- Completion 1st and 2nd term examinations and results, ongoing 3rd term exams.
- Psychosocial Health Counseling (Group/individual)
- Birthday and various festivals celebration
- Regular Yoga and Meditation Activities
- Recreational and educational tours
- Team Building Workshop
Activities in Details:
- Completion 1st and 2nd term examinations and results, ongoing 3rd term exams : The children from RN transit home have completed their 1st term examinations as per the school scheduled calendar. Most of the children secured good marks in this 1st term exams. Out of 27 children 10 scored distinction, 15 scored 1st division and 2 stood in second division. 27 children who sat for 2nd term exams, that was conducted in September. The results showed that children has improved in this term and scored higher percentage compared to 1st term. Children has been completed 3rd term exams and they are in vacation.
- Psychosocial Health Counseling (Group/individual): A psychosocial and health counseling was continued by the psychologist. In this reporting period 6 group sessions were conducted. Another 6 group sessions were conducted in November 21 and December 6. 18 individual counseling was conducted by the Psychologist. Those who attended the individual counseling during this period.
- Birthday and various festivals celebration: RN regularly celebrates each child's birthday that are living in its home. About 8 children's birthday was celebrated during this reporting period. 4 friends of RN came to celebrate their and their children's birthday during November, Decemmber and January.Similarly, Nepal is very rich in various traditional festivals, which falls almost every 2-3 in a month. Some of the important ones that was celebrated recently were thread ceremony, Dashain and Tihar festivals which are considered the most important ones. Some of the children were very pleased to go home with thier family members during long school breaks. Each festival has its own importance where special traditional food are prepared and fed to these children. All these festival celebrations have given them the homely feeling so that they do not miss their family, as well as learning for them to respect and develop bonding with each other and their relatives.
- Regular Yoga and Meditation Activities: RN has been continuing yoga and meditation classes in regular basis to the children. Yoga teacher is providing different tools and techniques of yogas and practising during the yoga classes. more than 15 children are participating yoga classes.
- Recreational and educational tours: RN from time to time organizes short educational or recreational tours for the children living in its home. Some of the children who could not go with their families were taken for a visit to Kavre during Dashain festival. They also were taken to malls and were provided with new cloths. Later all the kids were taken to watch a Nepali movie which had the theme of women empowerment and child rights, which they enjoyed a lot.
- Team Building Workshop: Team Building workshop is scheduled for Nov. 26, 27-29. The hotel in Mulpani for 11 participants of the organization. In this workshop participants were able to learn about psychosocial counseling and basic knowledge of case solving about children. The facilitator were used Game, role play and lecturing method during the workshop.
