Background:
Raksha Nepal has been actively working for women and children for the past 10 years. This organization supports those girls, women and their children who have been through different types of violence (sexual abuse, domestic violence, trafficking, polygamy victim, etc.) or who are vulnerable to violence. It also works in favor of the victims to raise their voice to the concerned institutions and help them get justice.
In the same context, since last 4 years, Raksha has established a Child Transit Home for those vulnerable children who have gone through negligence, orphans, sexually abused and other violations. The main objective to keep them in this transit home is to prevent them from following the wrong path and enjoy the basic rights like other normal children. Moreover, these children also get opportunity to make their life better. Raksha Nepal has been trying its best to give a safe and family environment to these vulnerable children, with limited funding source. RN with personal contributions has extended different kinds of support to more than 2500 children so far. Currently, it has 30 children in its transit home. RN has been coordinating with different organizations for their secure future.
Main Activities:
Activities in Detail:
First term Exams. Completed
The children from RN transit home have completed their 1st term examination as per the school scheduled calendar. These children have secured good results. In spite of limited resources and time, the result of these children has given hope and enthusiasm to all those who are involved with RN.
Regular Yoga and Meditation Activities
For alertness of mind body, RN has been running regular yoga and meditation activities for all the children and other elders living in its home. This practice has strengthened their mental health as well as supported them to divert their minds from all the negative thoughts.
Birthday and various festivals Celebration
RN regularly celebrates each child’s birthday that are living in its home. Occasionally, some friends of RN who have soft corner for children, also come to RN home to celebrate their or their kid’s birthday. This tradition is the happiest moment for everyone in the home, which is reflected on their faces. Similarly, Nepal is very rich in various traditional festivities, which falls almost every 2-3 in a month. Some of the important ones are the teacher’s day, mother’s day, Teej, Krishnaastami, thread ceremony, etc. Each festival has its own importance where special traditional food are prepared and fed to these children. All these festival celebrations have given them the homely feeling so that they do not miss their family, as well as learning for them to respect and develop bonding with each other and their relatives.
Taekwondo Assessment Completed
The assessment for the 1st 4-month taekwondo training has been done. Out of 37 participants, 9 received the double belt and the rest have reached higher level of the training. Those who completed the level were able to receive the yellow belt and those who succeeded the double belt received half green belts. This sport has definitely changed these children’s confidence level. They have developed their self-confidence and are ready to face any kind of obstacles. The training is being continued regularly.
Tuition classes
Regular tuition and coaching classes are being provided to all the children in the transit home. These coaching is done on different subjects in which they are weak. One regular teacher has been arranged to come and help them with their studies. Occasionally other national and international volunteers also come and help them in coaching language etc. Currently there are 1 volunteer who is helping the children with their studies and English language.
Guitar playing training session
Music is considered as the most effective way to heal the wounds or the pain. RN children are no exception to this fact - as all are very eager to sing, dance and listen to music. To fulfill their interest, RN has organized one tutor who is teaching 10 children to play guitar, one hour per week.
Recreational and education tours
RN from time to time organizes short educational or recreational tours for the children living in its home. This year they visited Mulpani, Godavari Botanical Garden, Fun Park and one temple visit and a picnic in the same area. Such visits and tours have given them motivation, knowledge and recreation. Sometimes, such tours are also organized by the volunteers who come to RN.
Leadership and personality development training
RN from time to time organizes different types of training in coordination with various organizations. Such activities and programs are very effective to help these children in shaping their personality and leadership qualities. Similarly, painting and drawing was also one the activities organized this year where all the children actively took part.

In this one day program 30 children from transit home, 7 children and women from the surrounding area received general health and eye check-up. The doctors from the Teaching Hospital, Dr. Madhu Thapa and the team as well as Senior Physician from Bir Hospital and Dr. Bhupendra Basnet were present.
