Background:

Raksha Nepal has been actively working for women and children for the past 10 years. This organization supports those girls, women and their children who have been through different types of violence (sexual abuse, domestic violence, trafficking, polygamy victim, etc.) or who are vulnerable to violence. It also works in favor of the victims to raise their voice to the concerned institutions and help them get justice.

In the same context, since last 5 years, Raksha Nepal has established a child Transit Home for those vulnerable children who have gone through negligence, orphans, sexually abused and other violations. The main objective to keep them in this transit home is to prevent them from following the wrong path and enjoy the basic rights like other normal children. Moreover, these children also get oppertunity to make their life better. Raksha Nepal has been trying its best to give a safe and family environment to these vulnerable children, with limited funding source. RN with personal contributions has extended different kinds of support to more than 2500 children so far. Currently, it has 30 children in its transit home. RN has been coordinating with different organizations for their secure future.

Major Activities:

  • Psychological Health Counseling (Group/individual)
  • General Health Check-up
  • Regular Yoga and Meditation Activities
  • Birthday and various festivals celebration
  • Challenges

Activities in Details:

  • Psychological Health Counseling (Group/individual): A psychosocial and health counseling, a pilot program for last quarter was conducted by the psychologist. Following are the various activities and observation done for the children living in the transit home. Counselor has been done in group counseling. The children were divided into groups of three for this activity. The play dough was provided to each child before the activity started. The children were supposed to make an image which they dislike the most or feel angry about. They were then asked to do whatever they liked with that image. Children were biting, beating, kicking and showing full anger and rage to this image. After some break the groups were again asked to make an image which they liked the most that could be best perso, or the best place. Children were very relative and made different places they had visited and people they liked the most. they expressed that these images were helpful, caring and supportive. They liked this activity and enjoyed doing with full interest. They were asked to imagine more about good things they have done in their life. This activity helped them to develop their imaginative power. The learning through this play dough was to encourage them to develop the habit of controlling their anger as well as to develop and broaden their opinions or viewpoints. In this activity, each child was provided with a diary, pen, blank paper and color pens. They were asked to draw the favorite pictures and paste in the cover of the diary. When they finished this their diary 'hero book' was looking every very attractive. Then the children were asked to write everyday in the book about the most liked or good activity which they can proudly say that they have done a hero work each day, before going to bed.
  • General Health check-up:In coordination with the physician from the Teaching Hospital, in April 2014, Raksha Nepal had organized a health check-up and referral for children was done in various hospitals. In this 3 hour check-up 30 children from transit home received general health check up. Besides that, the nurse pays visit to Raksha Nepal from time to time and as per need, who prescribes basic medicine and refer children to hospitals, if needed. It is important to inform about one child's health, which seems chronic, as he keeps falling sick every week. He needs to be taken to hospitals and clinics in emergency, sometimes even during the night. Even after having a lot of medicine and check-up, the doctors always advice that it is due to his previous state of living on the streets and malnutrition. The doctors also suggest that he needs special care and nutrition which may cure his ailment, when he gets older.
  • Regular Yoga and Meditation Activities:For alertness of mind body, RN has been running regular yoga and meditation activities for all the children and other elders living in its home. Luckily, one doctor and Yoga expert visited the home and shared knowledge about yoga and its benefits, which has encouraged everyone living here.
  • Birthday and various festivals celebration: Raksha Nepal regularly celebrates each child's birthday that are living in it's home. About 7 children's birthday was celebrated during this reporting period. 2 friends of RN came to celebrate their children's birthday during April and June months.
  • Challenges:
  • The main challenges is the security of the critical cases which is the problem for management. For example, Gyanu is very happy to continue her study after SLC, but in the meantime, her safety is a concern as the court has already released the culprits from the prision who were supposed to be for 13 year jail. Now, she is bit scared to go out freely and RN also is woried about her safety.
  • RN is in dilemma sometimes in dilemma while trying to send the children with their mothers, in the middle of the school sessions. Some could continue school from their mother's home, but this is not always the case for every child, as they be living in other part of the city.
  • Currently, the dormitory of the children are infested with bed bugs. RN has used several methods to get away with this problem but every year during summer this is repeated. Some have advised us to paint the rooms, so that there is much light and cleanliness that could solve this problem.
