Summary

Severe flooding along Lake Tanganyika displaced thousands of families in Burundi, disrupting children's education, emotional well-being, and family stability. This project supports flodd-affected children with school materials, structured psychosocial care, dignity kits for girls, and family stabilization assistance to help them recover from trauma, remain in school, and rebuild hope after climate-related displacement.

Challenge

Severe flooding along Lake Tanganyika, linked to El Nino and rising lake levels, displaced thousands of families in Burundi, destroying homes, schools, and livelihoods. Nearly 98,000 people were displaced during the 2023-2024 floods. Children face trauma, interrupted education, and increased risk of school dropout. Many vulnerable families struggle to recover without access to safe shelter, school materials, and psychosocial support.

Solution

This project will support flood-affected children in Burundi through an integrated approach that combines education support, psychosocial care, and family stabilization. Children will receive school materials, structured mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS), and safe learning assistance to help them remain in school and recover from trauma. Adolescent girls will receive dignity kits and hygiene support, while vulnerable families will receive shelter and stabilization assistance.

Long-Term Impact

This project will help prevent permanent school dropout among flood-affected children and strengthen long-term resilience in vulnerable communities. Children will regain confidence, improve their emotional well-being, and continue their education in safer and more supportive environments. By supporting families and promoting recovery after climate-related displacement, the project will contribute to stronger community stability, improved child protection and better preparedness for future chocks
