Over the first few months of 2024, Alert’s work in Nigeria has continued to build on the momentum we created last year. This includes launching a new project focusing on Policy Reform. Including people with disabilities, women and youth groups in decisions on policy priorities continues to be a fundamental part of our work as do efforts to transform partnerships to bridge the gap between civil society and government stakeholders.
One example of this is the work we have done to establish a national advocacy group for policy change on peace and security, which includes the Government, media and civil society.
The project we launched in 2023 on peace through climate action is now well established and over the past few months we have conducted a peer learning platform for commissioners of security in North-West and North-East Nigeria on the linkages between climate change and conflict, radicalisation, and access to justice. We have also delivered training on renewable energy and set up skills centres to train young women on income-generating activities.
The impact of peacebuilding work has been seen this quarter in examples such as the restoration of peace and improved social cohesion in Makurdi LGA after a long history of conflict. In Dangoma, a schoolteacher was inspired to set up a field trip and weekly storytelling sessionsto encourage parents to enrol girls in school after attending Alert’s awareness raising programme. Following the field trip, the number of female students rose by 57%. We are also delighted that one of the attendees of our renewable energy training has made the leap to become an exporter of briquettes and biochar manure to neighbouring countries.
Our work continues through a difficult time in the aid sector. At International Alert, we have decided to prioritise our resources in the areas that can make the most impact for peace. That is why we have decided to close this GlobalGiving project at this time. Our peacebuilding work in Nigeria will continue to support vulnerable women and girls in fragile contexts.
