GlobalGiving Donors Report
Educate and Empower 800 Ethiopian Girls Project
September - November 2013
BACKGROUND
GlobalGiving donors have generously supported Pathfinder International’s project to empower women and girls in Ethiopia by providing scholarships for their continued education to mitigate their risk of dropping out and to build their life and leadership skills. Since May 2008, Pathfinder has recruited 104 female students from poor families through its GlobalGiving project, Educate and Empower 800 Ethiopian Girls. In total, 77 girls from Addis Ababa and 27 girls from the Amhara region have received scholarship assistance and orientation on youth reproductive health issues.
UPDATE
We had an exciting start to the school year, with 20 young women who have received scholarship support continuing their education by enrolling in university. During this reporting period, the project did not enroll new scholarship beneficiaries, as the majority of new recruits (12 female students) were enrolled during the previous reporting period, prior to the September start of the school year. Instead, during the last quarter, the project extended tuition and school supplies assistance to four existing beneficiaries for a total of 40 additional months in school.
With the support of GlobalGiving donors, Pathfinder is currently providing support to 77 girls, who, in addition to receiving tuition assistance for continued education, are provided with sexual and reproductive health education and support for girls' clubs that provide social support and mentoring by successful women in their communities. Our comprehensive model integrates health information and life skills to help adolescent girls realize their full potential.
