Project Progress & Achievements

By Dr. Frank Schmielewski | Patron of the IRDNC Kunene Elephant Walk

Making Chili Candles to Deter Elephants
Making Chili Candles to Deter Elephants

During this reporting period, the project continued to make encouraging progress in reducing human-elephant conflict in the Kunene Region.

One of the key achievements has been the improved capacity of local rangers. Rangers are now better equipped to monitor elephant movements, respond to conflict situations, and support communities when elephants approach farms and settlements. This has strengthened the ability of local teams to react quickly and help prevent serious incidents.

The results are already visible. Only a small number of gardens were damaged by elephants during this period, which represents an important improvement for affected communities. Most importantly, no elephants were killed by farmers in the Kunene Region during the reporting period.

These developments show that practical support for rangers, combined with close cooperation with local communities, can help people and elephants coexist more safely. Protecting gardens and livelihoods remains essential, but preventing the killing of elephants is equally important for the long-term conservation of the region’s wildlife.

We will continue to strengthen ranger capacity, support communities in areas affected by elephants, and promote practical solutions that reduce damage to crops and prevent conflict before it escalates.

We are grateful to our donors and partners for making this work possible. Their support is helping communities protect their livelihoods while ensuring that elephants can continue to move safely through the Kunene landscape.
