Lun Tad school is back on its feet!

Thanks to your incredible generosity our work supporting education in Tacloban has made great progress over the last few months.

At the Lun Tad elementary school, just outside Tacloban, over 380 kids now have a safe, enriching learning environment once again.  Typhoon Haiyan damaged the school’s classrooms and destroyed important teaching materials, leaving the kids’ education in tatters.

But thanks to you, we’ve recently finished breathing new life into the school and given back the kids the education they deserve.

In late September we completed the repairing and repainting of fourteen classrooms at Lun Tad, which was two more than we originally planned for!  We were able to complete this work so quickly thanks to your donations and also thanks to the local community.

Family and friends of the school’s teachers and kids wanted to show you how much your donations meant.  So many of them lent hands to the project in return.  Over several weeks community volunteers of all ages came along to help scrape old paint off walls and repair furniture.

This community mobilization culminated in a special “Paint Festival” which saw over fifty local volunteers turn-out in just one day.  Our goal for the paint festival was to paint the entire outside of the school.  While this goal was ambitious the day was an incredible success and Lun Tad was transformed in the process.

All the kids are delighted with the school’s beautiful new look and Mr Solomon, Lun Tad’s principal, had this to say about the results:

“We are grateful and honored for the help extended to us. We are very busy, in fact our school [is] always hosting activities in Palo; because of your help painting all the building now our regional director and superintendent [are] impressed for a big change of the school.....thank you thank you .....and more power”

Since the paint festival we’ve finished renovating the inside of the remaining classrooms.  We’ve also provided school, art and sports supplies to replace those lost in the typhoon.

Thanks to you, Lun Tad school is now back on its feet again.  But it’s library and audio-visual room are still in need of repair.  There are also hundreds of other schools which still badly need help after typhoon Haiyan.  It’s a big job but happily GlobalGiving are here to help.

On November 8th, while funds last, GlobalGiving will be matching any donations to this project by 100%.  This is a great opportunity for you to double your impact.  So please, consider donating on November 8th and also sharing this chance with others.

As always, if you ever have any queries about how we’re using your donations, please don’t hesitate to email Emma@IDVolunteers.org. I would be delighted to hear from you.
