Last November, Typhoon Haiyan made landfall in the city of Tacloban. Haiyan was the strongest typhoon ever recorded to make landfall, and it devastated the city. Haiyan destroyed nearly everything in its path, killing thousands and displacing millions. Our team has been on the ground supporting survivors since November 25th, and huge strides have been made. But today, many thousands are still homeless, and far too many children have yet to return to school.
Since day, one education has been one of our top priorities in Tacloban. To date, we’ve cleared schools of debris, delivered school meals, re-opened the Aram Learning studio, run a summer camp for Talcloban’s kids and begun reconstruction of the San Agustin school.
Together, these projects have given 3,977 children the chance to get back to learning. That’s alot of kids – but it’s just the beginning.
We’re currently in the process of rebuilding the San Agustin school. When complete, this work will give 256 children a safe, enriching place to learn. There are dozens of schools in Tacloban which also need repairs or wholesale reconstruction before they can welcome children again.
With your support, we’ll rebuild as many of them as we can.
While repairing and rebuilding schools, we’ll also work with community leaders to identify other factors stopping children from returning to school and address them. Whether kids need school meals to ensure they aren’t too hungry to learn or schools supplies so that they can take notes and do their homework, your donations will ensure children have the capability to learn.
There’s a huge amount of work to do in Tacloban, but happily we don’t have to tackle it alone. In exactly a month, Microsoft will join the fight to return Tacloban’s children to school by doubling your donations.
One June 25th, if you give $50, Microsoft will double it to $100, and we’ll be able to invest in education in Tacloban. That makes June 25th a great day to give.
If you ever have any questions about our education work in Tacloban, please don’t hesitate to email Emma@IDVolunteers.org. I would be delighted to hear from you!
Thanks so much for your support, and very kind regards from our team at IDV!
