VISIONAR students Veronica (majoring in Electromechanical engineering) and Jesica (Electrical engineering) were invited to give a talk to children attending school in one of the marginal areas of San Francisco with high poverty and crime rates. The goal was for these young ladies to share their experience as college students and as VISIONAR scholars so that children could see it is possible to transcend their difficult environment and seek a better future by getting an education. At the same time, it was an important opportunity for Jesica and Veronica to challenge gender stereotypes, given that their careers are usually chosen by men, and to show what can be achieved with focus and determination.
The event took place in San Francisco’s local library. Jesica and Veronica explained what they were studying in simple terms that children could understand and by providing examples. Jesica shared that she loved “to see their astounded faces and hear the questions they had for us”.
One of the key messages Veronica and Jesica insisted on is that education is not only “for the rich”, and that there are ways to finance school, from merit-based scholarships like VISIONAR, to financial aid from the local government or the university.
By telling their personal stories, Veronica and Jesica inspired little ones to dream big and work hard for their dreams.
Please consider supporting one VISIONAR student through their school year, which represents USD $1,525 in today’s exchange rates. This amount helps pay for university fees, school supplies, books and transportation. As always, any amount is deeply appreciated and welcome.
