Since we last spoke, much has happened in Afghanistan! We have two major updates to share with you. One, we have been able to expand the education program, and two, our children are returning to their regular classes!
At Action for Development, we seek to provide education to street working children all over Afghanistan. In July 2021, we identified a new location for a school: a local market in Charikar City, Kapisa Province (63Km north from Kabul). Street-working children in this city largely depend on their daily earnings; families are used to involving their children in their daily work. Child labour is not prohibited there and as such, there is no way to eradicate it apart from enrolling the children in school. We considered the location appropriate since at the time, there were no schools nearby for children to be enrolled. Now, there is an AfD school! The site guarantees accessibility for the children and should be as safe as can be in the current climate. 27 children, out of which 11 are girls, are already enrolled.
Classes at the new site started in August and continue today, despite a government-mandated closure from August 15th to September 15th due to the Covid-19 lockdowns in Afghanistan.
These children need your help! Your donation would help us to improve the education in each location, continue to provide the children with their main meal of the day, as well as include more children in the program. None of this would have been possible without your contributions, and none of it can go on unless you keep them coming!
Back in Kabul, the school was also closed during the period mentioned above for Covid reasons. Though attendance of classes has dropped significantly (especially when it comes to girls) due to the recent turmoil in the country, the children are slowly returning to school. The community has yet to trust in their safety again, as many still fear to leave their houses, and our school is an important contribution to their resuming their daily lives. After all, the children get their main meal of the day from us! This is why your donations are so important - they ensure that we can maintain the school, which, in turn, ensures that people can find a way to live their lives again.
Despite all the unrest, we are still here. We have adapted to the government’s rules and regulations and are offering the girls (above the age of 13) in our care further education through a Vocational Education and Training Program. As soon as we can get this off the ground, we can continue to provide a safe place to keep them off the streets, learn skills such as embroidery, and eat well. Once again, your donations are essential for this project to be realised! We need your help to quickly adapt to the new situation so that we can continue to help the children in our communities.
Your help makes a huge difference!
Every donation counts!
Thank you for your generous support,
The Team at AfD
