Summary

In Guatemala, 1 in 10 people has a condition often treatable by surgery. Children with cleft lip and palate face unique health challenges, especially in nutrition. Our project supports these children through a specialized program. We work with caregivers and Rural Health Promoters who reach remote communities, providing nutritional supplements and empowering families through education. Our goal: Ensure these children reach optimal health for life-changing surgery.

Challenge

In Guatemala, 49.8% of children have chronic malnutrition. Children with cleft lip and palate are particularly vulnerable, facing a 2.5 times higher risk of mortality due to malnutrition. Many struggle with feeding difficulties, often unable to breastfeed, and lack access to essential nutritional supplements critical for their development and readiness for surgery.

Solution

Our Cleft Infant Nutrition Program employs a holistic care model: Early Detection through local health collaboration. Monthly Home Visits by dedicated Community Health Promoters for personalized care, growth monitoring, and family education. The children receive crucial supplements and specialized feeding equipment. When they are ready for surgery, volunteer doctors perform transformative surgeries.

Long-Term Impact

Our program ensures a lasting impact in the community by transforming the lives of children with cleft lip and palate. Through early detection and nutritional intervention, we not only improve health but also enhance educational access, reduce social stigma, and boost communication and respiratory functions. This holistic approach empowers children to thrive confidently and contribute meaningfully to their communities for years to come.
