My Beloved Family: Hsiao-Yi's Journey of Courage

By Communication Team | Project Contact

"My dad is tall, works hard, and takes us on fun outings. My mom is resilient, gentle, and beautiful—she always stands by me to solve any problem I face. My older sister has many friends, chats with me, helps with my homework, and protects me whenever classmates say unkind things..."

This heartwarming description comes from Hsiao-Yi, a young girl who has spent her childhood learning the true meaning of resilience.

The Long Road of Treatment

Ever since she was born, Hsiao-Yi has had a red hemangioma (a benign vascular tumor) right next to her nose. When she was a baby, her mother attempted medication therapy, but the side effects caused Hsiao-Yi's physical growth to stall, forcing them to stop the treatment under medical advice.

As Hsiao-Yi grew older, the hemangioma continued to expand. To prevent further growth, her family had to switch to laser therapy. Starting from the tender age of one and continuing all the way into her early elementary school years, every visit to the clinic meant facing cold, intimidating machinery and intense physical pain. During those moments, her mother could only hold Hsiao-Yi's tiny hand tightly, swallowing her own tears while cheering her daughter on.

Finding a Lifeline in Sunshine

The emotional toll eventually became overwhelming. For a period of time, just hearing the words "we are going out" would trigger severe panic, causing Hsiao-Yi to cry and scream in fear.

Recognizing their distress, Sunshine Social Welfare Foundation stepped in. Our social workers arranged play therapy for Hsiao-Yi. Guided gently by a professional therapist, her emotions gradually stabilized. Her mother later described this breakthrough, saying, "Finding Sunshine felt like catching onto a life-saving piece of driftwood in a stormy sea."

Over the years, Sunshine’s medical subsidies and psychological counseling support have been the anchor keeping Hsiao-Yi and her family moving forward. Through these challenges, Hsiao-Yi has not only grown incredibly brave, but she has also developed profound empathy, learning to accept and embrace people from all walks of life.

Art Born from Gratitude

Hsiao-Yi, who loves to draw, expressed her deep gratitude this year through her artwork titled My Beloved Family, which won a featured spot in the "Little Sunshine" charity calendar. Her creative inspiration came entirely from wanting to thank her father, mother, and sister. It was her family's constant encouragement and companionship that gave her the strength to endure the painful treatments and the courage to face curious or unkind stares from strangers.

This courage blooms thanks to her family—and thanks to the collective kindness of supporters like you.
