Thank you so much for your lifesaving and ongoing support. Your gifts help us provide a vital daily safeguard for Australian native species, assisting our carers on the ground as they rescue and care for animals in urgent need.
Imagine preparing for a family barbeque, only to lift the lid to find three sets of curious eyes blinking back at you! That's exactly what happened to a local family last month. Tucked inside the grill was a mother Ringail Possum with two juvenile "back-riders" clinging tightly to her fur. They called WIRES for help, and we dispatched our volunteer Lisa, who installed a custom-built drey in a nearby tree. To make the new house feel like home, Lisa moved some of the nest from the barbeque into the drey so the Ringtail family would recognise their own scent.
By leaving the barbeque lid open that night, Lisa made the old 'nest' feel exposed and unsafe. The mother possum took the hint, successfully moving her joeys into their new treehouse. It was a simple, scent-based solution that kept this little famly together, all thanks to the emergency rescue service you help provide!
In April, we received a call from a distressed property owner who discovered an Eastern Grey Kangaroo trapped in a cattle grid. The situation quickly became serious when the struggling kangaroo fell through the grid, with no way out.
The property owner called WIRES and our volunteer Julie and her husband quickly arrived, and dug their way under the grid.
Julie then drove to a late-night vet, and with their guidance, administered a sedative so they could carefully remove the kangaroo from underneath the grate.
Remarkably, the kanagroo escaped with only minor grazing on her back legs. She was taken into Julie's care, and is being closely monitored to ensure she makes a full recovery.
Thank you again. Your ongoing support provides 24/7 emergency rescue and care for thousands of native animals every month. On their behalf, we are incredibly grateful.
