In our community centre in the red light areas of Forbesganj, Neetu* and Rohit*, ages four and three respectively, sit sharing a plate of festive treats. Christmas, for them, isn't about the dazzle of lights or melodies of carols; it's in the shared morsel, the gift of sustenance. Their mother, ailing from long Covid, watches as Apne Aap's commitment to provide meals shines through their innocent eyes.
This Christmas, the red and yellow of Neetu's dress outshines any ornament, and Rohit's giggles are the season's music. For 1980 families like theirs, our Center has been a beacon through 2023’s lingering hardships.
Names have been changed for their safety, but their story is universal—a narrative of hope in adversity, a reminder that our collective giving is a powerful force, ensuring no child goes hungry, every child has a chance. This is the spirit of the season, the cheer we cherish, the promise we uphold.
With over 12 million meals provided to 600,000 women, our pledge has outgrown its initial promise, reflecting the boundless capacity of human kindness. Our commitment stands unwavering—we will continue to fuel the dreams and lives of children like Neetu and Rohit because for them, it is a lifeline, a choice between education and oblivion, survival and despair.
The smiles of Neetu and Rohit. remind us all that the greatest gift is one of love and life. Let their smiles guide us, reminding us that in giving, we receive the true essence of the holidays.
