Interfaith Encounter Day 2021

We met at FELM Center Jerusalem and held our Interfaith Encounter Day, an annual event when we celebrate with our friends from all groups of the Interfaith Encounter Association, as well as other partners and friends, the joy of interfaith encounter. In addition, this year was special as we we celebrated IEA's 20th anniversary with our coordinators and participants.
We held conversation circles followed by a light dinner. It was an opportunity for participants and coordinators to get to know people from groups other than their own, and we already heard of new partnerships fostered during the event.
We thank those who came and invite everyone to be part of the next chapters of IEA's story!

Jerusalem and Beyond

The Interfaith Encounter online group Jerusalem and beyond met on Zoom. This was the first encounter after both the war in Gaza and the riots which took place in Jerusalem and the mixed Jewish-Arab cities within Israel in May. It was important to recognize the emotions which were so close to the surface, yet at the same time, not get involved with political debate. The topic decided on by the coordinators was “our feelings of fear and distrust and how we can move forward despite these.”
Each person talked about how they felt ..mostly feelings of sadness and fear came up. The Muslim participants stressed how they were sad about the innocent children who died in Gaza as well as the use of force on the Temple Mount and the events in Sheik Jarrah. The Jewish participants listened and agreed that the death of all innocent people was horrible. The Jewish participants focused on the rocket attacks and lynches. The possibility of a face-to-face meeting at Almog Junction or further down on the Dead Sea was raised and almost everyone said that they would be interested. After the meeting, the Jewish participants wrote on the whatsapp group that they felt good about the meeting, that it was “real” and was important to “hear” how the Muslims perceived the situation.

Interfaith Storytelling Workshops

During the months of February and March, the Interfaith Encounter Association have conducted two special workshops on Interfaith Storytelling. The workshops were part of the Global Education through Digital Stories project, supported by the Anna Lindh Foundation and co-funded by the European Union.
Participants learned about the Sustainable Development Goals, the basics of Digital Storytelling method and the important role of storytelling in interfaith dialogue.
Special guests included Mr. Michael Wiener (Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights), Viktória Mihalkó and Nagy Balázs (Anthropolis NGO, Hungary) and Oren Gian and Amir Massarwa (Empathy Storytelling Project, IEA Debate for Peace).
