Challenge

According to the latest State of Global Education Update, 9 in 10 African children cannot read and understand a simple text by the age of 10. Across Africa, up to 13 children share a single textbook, and many have no books at all in their home languages (World Bank). This points to lost potential, stunted futures and missed opportunities for millions of African children. Without the ability to read, children struggle in every aspect of education, leaving them and their communities vulnerable.

Solution

The project provides a collection of free, openly licensed picture storybooks in over 250 languages of Africa available in both print and digital formats. We will use our tools with our Literacy Champions to create and translate more storybooks in under-resourced languages and distribute them to under-served schools, libraries and homes and support their effect use. Through our Reader App, educators, parents and other literacy champions will download storybooks to read with children offline.

Long-Term Impact

Storybooks help children to learn to read, to develop critical thinking, empathy and emotional well-being. Moreover, having access to diverse and interesting storybooks in their home language, also helps children gain confidence, creativity, and a sense of identity. Children who grow up with books are more likely to complete more years of schooling and are better prepared for future success in life. Imagine enabling hundreds of children in remote areas to read, both in print and digital formats!
