This project will distribute fruit tree seedlings to 20,000 agroforestry farmers in the Chalinze community. It will promote agricultural development in response to high poverty rates and food insecurity within the Chalinze local community. Through this initiative, 3,500 household gardens and 1,800 vegetable gardens for schools will be established. The project will engage 7,000 women and help create sustainable sources of income for women and the wider community.
Extensive deforestation occurring in the forests of Chalinze District has significantly contributed to the decline in food crop production across villages and wards in the district. According to records from Chalinze District, food crop production has decreased by 40% since 2008 due to climate-related factors. Approximately 30,000 residents in the villages and wards of Chalinze District are experiencing low agricultural yields, food shortages, and inadequate water sanitation.
This project will support the planting of 5,000 indigenous tree species in Chalinze District forests and 15,000 fruit trees through agroforestry practices, involving 7,000 farmers. The objective is to improve soil fertility, enhance nutrition, and stimulate economic development through the fruit tree program. In addition, the project will establish 1,800 organic food and vegetable gardens managed by 7,000 women to improve nutrition, increase food availability for communities boosting income
The project will provide training and educational programs on food crop production, agroforestry techniques, and forest restoration practices to benefit 30,000 community members. Furthermore, the rehabilitation of 10 natural water sources will support irrigation and household water use while reducing water-borne diseases through access to clean and safe water. The project will also promote gender equality and inclusive participation by training 7,000 women in tree nursery management.
