In August 2023, Rhoda, a grandmother in her 50s, was found living on the streets of Mombasa with her three grandchildren after their grassthatched home was destroyed by fire. With no shelter or income, she struggled daily to provide food, clothing, and school levies, relying on begging for survival.
Glad’s House intervened, identifying key priorities: resettling the family, reenrolling the children in school, and supporting Rhoda with a sustainable livelihood. The children were immediately placed back in school, restoring joy and normalcy. Rhoda, with prior experience in fishselling, received startup capital and equipment in September 2023.
Although the business has been facing challenges, Rhoda has remained determined, supplementing her income with small ventures while ensuring her grandchildren stayed in school. Recognizing her resilience, she was later enrolled in Glad’s House’s Business Empowerment Program, where she gained skills in business management, savings, and financial planning.
Today, Rhoda has expanded her home from a single room to two, giving her grandchildren greater comfort. She actively participates in a women’s group linked to financial institutions, showing her growing independence and community connection. Her grandchildren continue to excel academically and socially, earning praise from teachers.
Looking ahead, Glad’s House plans to expand Rhoda’s business to ensure longterm sustainability, supporting her journey to full selfsufficiency while guaranteeing her grandchildren’s continued education and brighter future.
