Mothers going beyond

Dear Friends ,

With Glad’s house working in the child-centered and rights- based approach methodology, we have been compelled to think beyond our normal way of working. This is because of the complexities of children cases. As the famous quote by Fred Armisen goes “Remember there is no one way of doing things, if you just get a hammer and hit it really hard, whatever it is, I guarantee you it will open”, we had to be brave and start a new program.

As we continue to meet siblings in the streets, other factors continue to challenge our foster care program. Some have very young siblings who cannot be placed in foster care for the risk of separation and losing family connection, some have years apart so getting a right family to match them becomes difficult. For some they are more than 2, which again makes it harder to place more than 2 children in  one foster family.

With the best interest of the child taking the lead, 3 mothers have agreed to shift from their original locations to come to Magongo community, near Glad’s House programs and activities with their children after they have decided that they want to live a life away from the streets.

I have not paid house rent for more than 7 years. The houses here are very expensive but because my 3 children have agreed to settle, I will shift. I have been praying for this to happen, now I will do my best to support them. Said a mother of 3 boys.

The three boys, two of whom are twins aged 14 years and 11 years have been out of school for more than 3 years. In order for them to fight for their dreams of continuing with education, they have been placed in our catch up education program while they live with their mother and continue to develop.

With continueed support, we are hopeful that the 3 boys will be able to join school in their respective classes by next year. This will be a huge achievement among small achievements.

Thank you very much for not giving up on our work.
