Dear friends,
We have come to the end of academic year. The children we have been supporting through education are now on holidays.
Since January to November 22, we have supported 19 children through primary education, 7 children and young people in secondary school and 6 in vocational skills training. Among these are 4 children whom we were able to place back to school through your support on this project. To give you a proper update, i would like to share the story of Vivian.
We met Vivian in the streets of Mombasa while she was almost 20 years old. Vivian ended up in the streets of Mombasa few weeks before we met her. She was brought in by a young man in th name of marriage. Vivan left home hoping for better life with the man.
Vivian is a second born ina a family of 6 children being raised by a single mother. Her school life has never been stable as most of the time she was forced to be out of school due to lack of fees. She was forced to be out of school for 2 terms in 2019. With covid 19, the situation worsened and she became more vulnerable. With all the vulnerabilities around her, she suffered alot of sexual abuse from uncountable men. She cannot remeber ever having a healthy relationship with a man outside family and school. This is how she landed in the streets of Mombasa.
Vivian would come from the streets to Glad's House safe space for 2 months consecutively. She really challenged us becuase when all the other children went back to the streets in the evening, she would still remain untill 8.30pm. All she wanted was to persue education and stay away form the man who had brought her to the streets. The man was literaly hunting her day and night. She demostrate high committment and stuck to what she wanted- to go back to school. With daytime catch-up education, volleyball and counselling sessions, she started to regain her confidence and self esteem.
Vivian has just completed her year 1 in secondary school. While on holiday she lives with a foster family while she continues to receive other individual support.
Your support and and great believe in our work gives people like Vivian a life changing opportunity. On behalf of the children and young peole, we want to thank you so much.
