What's Happening with the 5 Rescued Hero Horses?

By Elaine Cosby | Project Leader

High-5! We're going on the horse!
High-5! We're going on the horse!

Here's what YOU HAVE ACCOMPLISHED!  The support we have received to date has been incredible. Your gifts are the foundation on which we can continue to improve and show the healing connection our rescued horses provide for people with special challenges, and thus improve the quality of life for many in our community. Here are two examples:

“K” is 6 years old and has multiple challenges that are not unusual with his diagnosis of autism. Communicating, working through transitions, following directions, understanding how to be safe and work with others, to name a few. He has been working with Boo and in the beginning, he was very scared. This past week, for the first time, K chose to sit in a saddle and ride. His progress and his joy in being empowered (saying “camina,” and “whoa”) showed on everyone’s face, and Boo, our hero rescue horse, was quietly there for him…listening, responding, and giving him his best.

“D” is 18, a high school senior. His aunt wrote about Horses of Hope and D’s experience here. This organization has done great things [for my nephew]! He has become more social and makes friends easier now. We also have noticed the changes with his school work…now he does his school assignments on his own and only ask for help when necessary which is not often. He is also open to try new things and go to new places which he didn’t do before [coming to] Horses of Hope. I highly recommend this organization to anybody that has kids with autism or any other disorder.” D was our Equestrian of the Week this past week, and he was riding one of our rescue horses, Jibaron, a former police horse who experienced trauma during Hurricane Maria.

Since this project started, we have had our newest rescues, Boo and Rio, health-checked and vaccinated by the veterinarian and their teeth “floated” by our equine dentist. In addition, all five of our rescues have been dewormed, and given monthly hoof care by our farrier – all paid for because of your generosity. We have also been able to get a few items of the needed additional tack and equipment for our newest additions, Boo and Rio, both with us less than 6 months. We are presently working on a nutrition plan and feed program to keep everyone in top health. And every week we work on training the horses, especially Boo and Rio, to work under saddle. Through all of this, we listen to what the horses need and watch to be sure that we are providing the best care possible, with the least amount of stress.

By reaching over $5,000 in donations and over 40 donors, you have helped us become members of GlobalGiving, which allows our project to stay on the website and provides numerous resources and connections with other nonprofits so we can learn from each other. Also, next month GlobalGiving will match all recurring monthly donations at 100% (up to $200 each). However, we are still over $4,000 from our original goal (and needed funding). Note: Our project will be featured on the front page 11/29/21, a day before November, 30 - Giving Tuesday. Please share with others so we can reach our goal that day.

YOU are the reason we can continue to succeed. Your support in the form of donations and sharing our mission has given us the cornerstones we need to move forward serving the community while providing quality care for our herd. We are not asking you to donate again, although if you choose to do so, the gratitude is magnified once again. Please follow us on Facebook  https://www.facebook.com/horsesofhopepr/ and Instagram (@Hoh.pr and @equineelaine) for more stories. Every day we see miracles happening, and with your help this will increase many times over.
