Idjwi Island is located in the province of Sud-Kivu in DRC, and is home to 1,732 people living with disabilities who live in severe poverty and are deprived of everything. These include the poor education of disabled children and limited access to healthcare. As part of this project, we aim to support the schooling and health care of 150 of the most vulnerable. These problems have already led to numerous consequences, including illiteracy and high mortality rate among disabled children in Jdjwi.
Investigators who delved into the causes of these problems in January 2024 revealed poverty among parents, lack of appropriate facilities in schools and health centers for the disabled, lack of specialized support in Idjwi's schools and health facilities, negative community discrimination against disabled children, and inferiority complexes among these children. These problems have already led to numerous consequences, including illiteracy among disabled children, low school enrolment rates etc.
We therefore decided to design this project to create a more inclusive and accessible environment by reducing illiteracy among the 150 disabled children on the island of Idjwi, making them better educated and more autonomous thanks to the scholarships that will be awarded to them. On the health front, paying structures in advance a solidarity amount will enable these disabled people to have access to quality health care. This will help reduce the mortality rate and facilitate the provision
The long-term effects that the project will have on the community and/or beneficiaries are: Increased enrolment of disabled children at Idjwi. Improved academic performance of disabled children. Reduced school wastage among disabled children. Improved access to primary healthcare and rehabilitation services for disabled children. Reduced community discrimination against disabled children. Increased capacity of schools and health centers to meet the needs of disabled children.
