Back to school enrolment campaigns in Mityana

By Mutyaba James Claude | Executive Director

During this period under review, Empowerment for the Poor-Uganda has played an invaluable role in raising awareness about back to school enrolment and the importance of education among community members as well as in supporting the school access, retain and completes primary and secondary education especially among girls through our Back to School Enrolment Campaigns. It should be noted that COVID-19 pandemic has resulted into the largest disruption to schooling in modern times where hundreds of most vulnerable children are still stranded in their homes unable to join schools and others lost all the guts to go back to schools.

We have implemented Back to School campaigns with an aim   facilitate access to education by giving children scholastic materials to enable them return to and stay in school without difficulty; We believe that education gives strong hopes and dreams to children and their future prospects in life and work

We have noted that the impact of school closures was greatly damaging to children especially those from critically vulnerable families to an extent that they are less likely to be in school even with opening of schools; yet being at home still, these children face additional risk factors from being out of school, including stress and anxiety, being integrated into child labour activities, violence, and sexual abuse. Therefore, to ensure that children rapidly return to school as soon as possible has been our greatest concern. During this period, we have carried out back to school campaigns in Magonga Parish, Malangala Sub County, Mityana District and we have so far reached out to 1,560 and their children and mobilized them to go back to school.

This will not have been possible without the generous support of our friends and sponsors. We want to thank you so much for your invaluable support. We also inform you that more huge support is still needed mobilize many children go back to school. Our community visits have found out that COVID-19 made many families to break up where many fathers left their homes and its only women trying hard to take care of the family where they meet many barriers that hinder them to ensure that their children access good quality education. Many children became pregnant but men who made them pregnant ran away and they need to be taken back to school.  I continue to call upon you our dear sponsors to continue working together to remove these hurdles and pave way for children future. We thank you indeed for your continued unwavering support.
