Summary

This project will help 10 female jobless youths to make reusable sanitary pads for school girls who miss school during their menstrual cycle or completely drop out of school because blood 'embarrassed' them in the classroom. They will be making reusable sanitary towels for 700+ females at REF community center and 5,000+ female villagers in the surrounding communities. This beneficiary-centered project will fight menstrual stigma in rural communities and promote menstrual hygiene among women.

Challenge

According to The Borgen Project, as of 2019, nearly 1 in every 4 Ugandan girls between ages 12 to 18 will drop out of school once they begin menstruating & for those who do attend school, girls' absence rates triple from 7% to 28% during their periods. Although entities have risen up to support period poverty, the number of females menstruating every month is way higher than existing support. This project will support more than 6000 females living in Mawujjo village and its neighboring villages.

Solution

Over 6,000+ Students and adult females of menstruating age will have access to clean, reusable and affordable sanitary pads to use every month, which will be a big achievement towards Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR). Employment opportunity will be created for the 10 female youths running this project because they are youths coming from families whose monthly spending is below $10. This project will improve their monthly income to at least $50 or even more.

Long-Term Impact

The project will provide reusable sanitary pads to more than 1,000 school-going girls, which will encourage them to remain in school and reduce (if not, totally eliminate) absenteeism during their menstrual cycles. Non-school going youths will be encouraged to go back to school as a result of this project. Female villagers will embrace their menstrual periods with confidence and in a much hygienic way.
