We just completed our 3rd summer at Sunrise Day Camp-Pearl River, and everyone had a fantastic summer! We were so sad to see camp end but so many wonderful memories of the summer were created that will last forever.
Our camper attendance reached an all-time high of 193 campers, up 44% versus the summer of 2014. Our campers traveled from all over the NY Metro region just to come to Sunrise: Rockland, Westchester, Orange County, Manhattan, Bronx, and 9 counties in New Jersey.
Everyone had a blast this summer! One of the most special treats of the summer was the opening of the new Sunrise Treehouse built by Pete Nelson of Animal Planet’s “Treehouse Masters” and financed by Quicken Loans. The treehouse is multi level, whimsically designed, handicapped accessible and fits beautifully into the landscape of the camp. Campers can enjoy activities such as music, board games, reading, and bowling on the upper level of the treehouse, and swings and hanging out on the lower level. We were so excited when Pete Nelson featured Sunrise on his TV show on Friday, August 21! You can watch the show by clicking on this link:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hjtdGNcRCZY
Another summer highlight was the annual “color war” in which campers and counselors were divided into 2 teams and enjoyed friendly competition for 3 days. This year’s color war break featured some animals that had escaped from their zoo and their zookeeper who was chasing after them! The 2 teams were the Orange Jaguars and the Green Pythons, and campers and staff dressed up in costume and body paint for all of color war. In 3 days, Sunrise campers and staff on each team designed and decorated a creative plaque and banner, and also performed a skit, song, and cheer all related to their team’s theme. One of the most craziest and exciting events of color war was the Apache Relay. Everyone at camp was involved in the Apache Relay and had a wonderful time. Color war is just pure fun and it doesn’t matter who wins! Our campers learned that respect and sportsmanship are more important than winning and these are lessons that are best learned at summer camp.
Looking ahead, our annual “Fall Festival Family Reunion” will take place at camp on Sunday, October 4. The festivities will begin in the morning with volunteers setting up crafts and fall themed decorations. Camp families and staff members will arrive in the afternoon and will enjoy a variety of fall crafts and treats. We can’t wait to see everybody!
