5k to $40k Challenge: Summer Camp Ahead

The walkers and runners may have crossed the finish line at the 2013 Great Human Race, but the challenge is just beginning at Genesis Home, a nonprofit working to end homelessness for families with children.

Genesis Home created the 5K to $40K Road to Enrichment Challenge as its fundraising campaign for the Great Human Race to support enrichment programs benefiting homeless children. To date, we have raised nearly $20,000 in online donations and corporate sponsorships.

The first hurdle in the challenge was to raise $10,000 to send all school-aged Genesis Home children to summer camp. Hafiza M., a recent Genesis Home graduate, shared how sending her son to summer camp last year made an impact on her family.

“It was exciting for the kids in the summer, and at the same time we were able to work on moving out of Genesis Home” said Hafiza. “They went every day. My son thinks he’s ready for the Olympics because he learned how to swim. Anywhere we go he’s like, ‘Mama, do they have a pool? Well, you know I can swim now!’”

Genesis Home will continue the challenge until it reaches the $40,000 goal. For every $10,000 raised, the funds will go toward the following programs:

  • $10,000: Sends every Genesis Home school-aged child to summer camp. (Achieved)
  • $20,000: Provides after-school tutoring.
  • $30,000: Provides health and wellness programs.
  • $40,000: Provides direct-service family enrichment programs.
