"My name is Nick, I’m 28 years old and I have Becker Muscular Dystrophy.
My family and I found out that I had BMD when I was 11 years old. We were on holiday in Australia visiting a water park when all of a sudden I couldn’t move. A lady came over to my parents and asked them if I had Becker MD. My parents said no, they had not even heard of the condition. The lady said that her son can’t walk after being in water or doing too much exercise because he had BMD.
When we got home from our holiday, I had some tests, the tests showed I did have BMD, as you can imagine, this was a huge shock to all my family and me.
If it wasn’t for the MD Support Centre, I wouldn’t get the vital physiotherapy that I need to keep my muscles strong enough to keep me walking, this is treatment that I can't get anywhere else. And the centre also gives me a chance to meet with other people with the same or similar condition to me, which is really nice, because it makes you not feel you are not on your own".
We want to transform access to therapies so that everyone in Nick's position can get the treatment they need. This is why we’d like to take the opportunity to say THANK YOU once again, to you, as one of our donors, for helping us take our first steps towards developing a toolkit for the wider Musclar Dystrophy community that can show how to change the therapies landscape for good.
As you know, the first part of our toolkit will be short videos demonstrating our therapy model. We are actively working on this at the moment but would welcome and donations towards our £3,750 ($5,000) filming and production costs. We are also working on other parts of our toolkit including how to develop a model of therapy provision that offers local access to support for people with MD. In this aim we are currently opening a new satellite clinic and documenting the process as a part of our toolkit.
Thank you for being a part of this and helping us to make it happen!
