Strengthen women peace networks in Drcongo

In eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, women continue to carry a heavy burden of conflict while playing a vital, yet often unrecognized, role in keeping their communities together. They mediate family and community disputes, support survivors, protect children, and help prevent tensions from escalating—yet they are still too often excluded from formal peace and decision-making processes. The Incubator for Peace and Women’s Leadership for Social Transformation was created to change this reality by supporting Congolese women to become recognized peacebuilders, mediators, community leaders, and advocates for lasting social transformation. The project will establish Women’s Peace Huts in strategic communities as safe and accessible spaces where women can help resolve inter-community and land disputes before they become violent, while also connecting survivors of gender-based violence with appropriate support and referral services.

The project is currently in its preparation and resource-mobilization phase. We are identifying qualified trainers and community learners who will participate in the planned capacity-building activities. The project is designed around several complementary approaches, including women’s leadership and mediation, gender-responsive early warning systems, positive masculinity, and youth engagement. Women peace network members will be equipped to recognize and report early signs of rising tensions—including harassment, restrictions on women’s movement, and other community-level warning signals—using accessible mobile-based reporting mechanisms. With a total project budget of US$100,000, no funds have yet been raised toward the project, making donor support especially urgent. Through our collaboration with GlobalGiving, we are working to reach a wider community of international supporters and mobilize the resources needed to move from preparation to implementation and achieve the project’s objectives.

The expected impact goes beyond the immediate prevention of violence. We want to see women recognized not simply as victims or beneficiaries, but as experts, mediators, decision-makers, and leaders capable of shaping the future of their communities and country. Over the longer term, the project seeks to contribute to greater participation of women in public leadership and to help ensure that gender equality is meaningfully reflected in peacebuilding, governance, and social policy. We invite individuals, foundations, institutions, and partners around the world to stand with Congolese women and invest in this initiative. Every contribution can help create a safer space for dialogue, strengthen a woman’s leadership, support early action against conflict, and give communities a greater chance to choose peace before violence takes hold.
