Since Monday, June 15th, marking World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, Elders Assistance ASBL has been on the ground in Kabare (South Kivu) to break the silence. Elderly women and men face violent neglect, the unfair "Mama Mujakazi" exploitation system, and life-threatening witchcraft accusations. We are actively conducting grassroots awareness campaigns across 3 groupings and villages like Bugore to sensitize over 300 households. In the territory of Kabare, growing old has dangerously become associated with vulnerability and false stigma. Elders, especially widows, are increasingly victims of infounded accusations of witchcraft fueled by false prophecies, which isolates them and destroys their lives. Furthermore, the local "Mama Mujakazi" system locks many older persons into hidden forms of domestic exploitation and abuse. Beyond words, Elders Assistance ASBL is taking concrete action. Our mobile teams are deployed in the villages of the Bugore grouping to deeply sensitize families and local leaders. We conduct door-to-door educational dialogues, challenge dangerous cultural myths, and establish community watch groups to immediately report abuse. We teach the community that aging is not a curse, but a blessing and a vital source of wisdom.
By educating over 300 households and local chiefs, we are building a protective social shield around older persons in South Kivu. This project will permanently eradicate false witchcraft stigmas, restore the traditional respect owed to seniors, and create a community-led alert network to save vulnerable elders from violence and banish domestic exploitation forever.
