Eliminate the harmful practice of child marriage in Tanzania through awareness creation, behaviour change, and empowering communities with knowledge and skills to prevent child marriage. Promote the implementation of laws and policies that protect children, especially girls, and support the fulfilment of their human rights. Develop and implement human development activities such as capacity building and entrepreneurship programs to reduce the effects of child marriage.
In Tanzania, about 30% of girls are married before the age of 18, and some are married before the age of 15, especially in rural communities. In regions such as Shinyanga, Tabora, and Mara, some families marry off their daughters because of poverty, bride price, and cultural practices. Child marriage ends a girl's childhood, limits her access to education, exposes her to domestic violence, and increases the risk of early pregnancies and health complications. Lack of education affects girls.
Families will be educated on the dangers and negative effects of child marriage through training sessions, community meetings, and distribution of educational materials. Community and local leaders will be supported to develop action plans to prevent child marriage. Parents of vulnerable girls will receive entrepreneurship and income-generating skills together with support incentives to help girls remain in school.Girls will also receive school materials and sanitary pads to support their skills
The project will help delay marriage for at least 3,000 girls in Tanzania, support the Government in strengthening policies and allocating resources for health, education, and economic opportunities for girls at risk of child marriage. Girls will become more aware of their rights, communities will gain increased knowledge about the dangers of child marriage, and young people will benefit from entrepreneurship and capacity-building programs, reducing poverty in communities
